Catalina

Just before school started for Katherine, we spent four days in Catalina. What a relaxing time. Since the kids keep you home at night, Suzy and I caught up on our reading and sleep. I started and finished two books.
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time describes the journey of an autistic 15 year old boy as he discovers who murdered his neighbors dog. One of the best books I've read in a long time. Highly recommended.
Running with Scissorsis a disturbing memoir of a young boy left to be raised by his mom's psychologist so she can handle her own problems. Makes you realize how unfit some people are to be parents. It's a good read, but tough subject matter.
There were certainly numerous chips in the childhood Burroughs describes: an alcoholic father, an unstable mother who gives him up for adoption to her therapist, and an adolescence spent as part of the therapist's eccentric extended family, gobbling prescription meds and fooling around with both an old electroshock machine and a pedophile who lives in a shed out back.
