As we were looking at some of National Geographic's top photos from 2006, we came upon this green monkey looking thing. Vincent looked over my shoulder and says, that's a pygmy marmoset. I look down, read the description, and find to my surprise that he's right (I've never heard of a pygmy marmoset to begin with). For the next 30 seconds, I think I have a genius on my hand, a four year old who can read. How has he been hiding his reading from us??

Well, Vincent doesn't read. He saw these minute monkeys on Go Diego Go.

Still, pretty good recognition skills.

In a rear photograph, I put myself in front of the camera as Vincent hangs on for dear life.

Katherine stands out in pink with what looks like a B&W background.

Tricia and Katherine cruise down the shore in Long Beach.

Vincent contemplates his future.

Using some Christmas $$, I bought a 50mm lens for my camera. Why a fixed lens? It lets in more light (less need for flash indoors) and allows for more bokeh. What's bokeh? Bokeh is the blurring of the out-of-focus areas which helps to emphasize the main subject. These lenses are great for portraits. Hope to have some great shots using it over the next few months.

If you can't guess, the background of this shot is a lit Christmas Tree (note how the bear isn't entirely in focus.)

Vincent finally woke up at 8:30am, but was happy to make his way down to start opening gifts.

After waiting a long 90 minutes upstairs, Katherine was finally allowed downstairs to open gifts.

Merry Christmas to all.

Whenever Vincent cries over a toy taken or milk spilt, I tell him to toughen up -- don't cry like a baby, be a strong boy. Returning home from a rare night out, Vincent told me he cried after Suzy and I left.

Steve: Vincent, you didn't cry like a baby, did you?
Vincent: No Daddy, I cried like a man.

To which I had no reply.

Christmas is just around the corner and we celebrated with our fourth(?) annual Gingerbread Party.

Some months ago, we started building a mantel for our fireplace. It didn't start out that well but the carpet is in, the paint is up, the Christmas decorations are out, and I love it.

For the second time, I was on the winning team for Yahoo's Hackday. This time I was the only developer, so it was a late night. Unfortunately, there have been no public announcements this time. But Yahoo! was busy with a major reorg, so Hackday was keep on the down-low.

This time I had a feeling we were going to win. Now I'm not a believer in luck or karma, but the day just started out that way. I drove to work without hitting a single red light or traffic on the freeway. Then I found a parking spot on the first floor. Now' that's an achievement. Then, I just slowly progressed on the hack throughout the day and night, taking shortcuts at times (it's a hack after all), but feeling good the whole time. At midnight, I called it quits feeling that we had a potential winner on our hands. And it's not like there isn't competition ... there were over 100 entries this time.

While I won't reveal the hack, I'm writing about some of the general techniques I use for it on my new php/javascript programming web site. If you're a programmer, follow along to see just how easy it is to get a Web 2.0 site with AJAX and animation up and running.

So as not to bore the family with computer programming related items, I've created a new website dedicated to web programming. On the site I will write blog entries on programming PHP and Javascript programming, so if that doesn't sound interesting, you've been warned. For now, photos of the family and stories on farting, doggy poop and vomit stay here.

Life imitates art.

Yes, that does sound like a headline from The Onion but the story is true.

Farts spark emergency landing

AN American Airlines flight has made an emergency landing after a passenger with severe gas problems struck matches to mask the odour of flatulence.
