November 2006 Archives

In the past two days, I've let Ally out 4 times between the hours of 12 midnight and 4am for poopy calls, cleaned up 3 piles of doggy vomit (she got into the chicken bouillon cubes) dry heaving myself, and Bella had a rather nasty incident in the shower yet again.

Looks like I'll be ready to change those diapers again come June.

In what must be my first non-animated, non-kid's movie in a year, I ventured out tonight to see the new James Bond film, Casino Royale. After years of over produced, overacted, corn-ball scripted movies, we finally have a winner. The new Bond is grittier, edgier and the best Bond since Sean Connery. The film includes some great action scenes that don't rely on the gadgets of old. Actual running and jumping, kicking and punching ... invisible, submersible, oil slicking, seat ejecting, missile firing cars were left out of this production.

The movie is not perfect. It goes on a bit long and the story gets a bit confused at the end. But if you enjoy action and with journeyman acting, it's definitely worth seeing.

Ok, Suzy always reminds to not to just talk about myself. So here's a little story to illuminate Vincent's sweet nature.

In pre-school, the kids were making turkeys for Thanksgiving. Asked what he was thankful for, Vincent responded:

The baby in my mommy's tummy.

Oh, have I mentioned that Suzy is pregnant? Our third is on the way, expecting about June 9th, 2007. Long way to go and lots to do before this happens. Hence the plumbing and car shopping spree below.

After holding on to a 1995 Pathfinder for 8 years, we upgraded to a new Honda Pilot. We wanted a three row SUV that actually fit in the garage and didn't require excessive trips to the gas station.

Instead of going to a dealer first thing, I configured the car online and asked for email quotes. What a great decision that was. Within hours, I was emailed 3 different prices. No haggling with the dealer required. Bottom line, I saved more than $3,000 off the sticker price. Not bad for browsing the web.

The Pilot I purchased comes with 3 months free of XM Satellite radio. Man, I'm addicted. Quality, commercial-free music. Trying to figure out how to get it for my car now.

So next time you want a car, make sure to get bids online. It may save you a lot of money and hassle.

On Sunday, I installed a new faucet in the bathroom. As most things in plumbing, the removal takes longer than the installation. The problem: nature welds. After 20+ years of corrosion, some of those nuts just won’t give.

Tools Purchased: 1 mini saw to cut copper pipe ($6)

Parts Purchased: 2 compression valves, 2 braided metal supply lines ($25)

Supplies Purchased (but probably already owned): teflon tape, plumbers putty ($4)

Removal: 4 hours (2 trips to the plumbing store)

Installation (90%): 1 hour

Find missing gasket: 30 minutes

Conclusion: The hardest part was removing the old stem valves and fitting my body under the sink. It doesn’t pay to be a “large” plumber. Overall, this was a pretty successful DIY repair. My body is sore and I still don't have the pop-up drain hooked up properly, but there are no leaks and I only spent $10 on tools and supplies.

Game Consoles

They're coming. A year after Microsoft's XBox360 launch, Nintendo Wii and Sony PlayStation 3 are coming this month.

Nintendo Wii wins in price, motion controller and family games, whereas the others are all about blood, gore and graphics.

I'm so getting this one.

Ok, this is a little lame but while I'm on the Irish kick:

I like my beer like I like my butter: Irish

ipod_shuffle_pic.jpg

My iPod Shuffle arrived Thursday from the Chinese factory, engraved and ready to play. It amazing that a product can be customized and shipped from half way across the world in three days.

As with the previous Shuffle, there is no screen. To me, that's a feature. No glass to scratch. Drop at will. It holds about 200 songs and is perfect for the gym.

The size has to be seen to believed. Not everyone believed it was a real MP3 player. It's sooo small, it's a wonder there's room for a battery and circuit board.

Sound quality is great and the battery purportedly lasts 12 hours.

Highly recommended. It's the perfect stocking stuffer.
